چکیده

The following essay aims at the description of direct and indirect control mechanisms within the scope of real-time collective traffic control measures. A general system archtitecture of traffic control systems on motorways is presented, including the traffic data detection infrastructure, outstations to preprocess the detected impulses and to control the variable message signs (VMS), subcenters to process the traffic data for stretch control and Traffic Control Centers (TCC) for network monitoring and optimisation. Intelligent methods are needed to analyse the traffic flow with the goal of incident detection, data completion and the estimation od traffic states. The key role of the traffic control architecture has the Traffic Control Center TCC. The TCC monitors the trafic situation as well as the control situation and the infrastructure situation to alert the operators in case of any kind of incidents. Furtheron, the TCC is responsible for network management and the generation of traffic messages for driver information services. New developments in the area of congestion management are pointed out to improve the traffic network management by intelligent methods.

Overview of Motorway Network Traffic Control Strategies

The efficient, safe, and less polluting transportation of persons and goods on motorways calls for an optimal utilisation of the available infrastructure via suitable application of a variety of traffic control measures. The recent developments and advances in the areas of computation and communications may support this effort, but it is evident that the efficiency of traffic control depends on...

Variable Speed Limits: Conceptual Design for Queensland Practice

Variable Speed Limits (VSL) is an Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) control tool which can enhance traffic safety and which has the potential to contribute to traffic efficiency. Queensland's motorways experience a large volume of commuter traffic in peak periods, leading to heavy recurrent congestion and a high frequency of incidents. Consequently, Queensland's Department of Transport a...

Air pollution from truck traffic and lung function in children living near motorways.

The contribution of motorized traffic to air pollution is widely recognized, but relatively few studies have looked at the respiratory health status of subjects living near busy roads. We studied children in six areas located near major motorways in the Netherlands. We measured lung function in the children, and we assessed their exposure to traffic-related air pollution using separate traffic ...

Feedback-Based Integrated Motorway Traffic Flow Control

Congestion on motorways is a serious problem of modern societies. It reduces the nominal capacity of the motorway infrastructure, with serious impact on travel times, traffic safety, fuel consumption and environmental pollution. Various traffic management measures have been proposed to alleviate traffic congestion but are known to face limitations. An integrated motorway traffic flow control co...

A Feedback-Based Approach for Mainstream Traffic Flow Control of Multiple Bottlenecks on Motorways

Mainstream traffic flow control (MTFC) enabled via variable speed limits (VSLs) has been investigated in previous studies, utilizing various control strategies. In this paper a new feedback control strategy is proposed for MTFC enabled via VSLs, considering multiple bottleneck locations. Results are evaluated using a validated macroscopic model. The feedback concept is robust and can be immedia...
